Liverpool were this evening locked in talks with West Ham United regarding the proposed transfer of Frederic Kanoute to Anfield.

Time is running out for Houllier to bring in an alternative to Anelka. If the Liverpool boss can't agree a better financial alternative, then he will proceed with the purchase of the onloan PSG striker. Djibril Cisse remains the man the boss sees as Robbie Fowler's direct replacement and Houllier would rather land him than Kanoute or Anelka but the chances of that happening this season appear slim - although the boss still hasn't given up.
While there is no doubting Anelka's ability, Houllier has other reasons for not wanting to press ahead with the deal, details of which will be detailed on Tuesday night's Insider update (scheduled for 11pm).
